Na, na, na, diva is a female version of a hustler…. hey hey everybody and welcome back to another segment of ‘Noire Excellence’! Say hello to Dominique aka Dominique Da Diva; a VA native whose definitely doing big things when it comes to radio and I had the pleasure recently to chat with her and was able to get to know the person behind the name. Want to see how everything went? Just keep reading… =D
ATBEL: Why hello lady! I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down and chat with me. So for starters, let everybody know a little bit about yourself..
DD: Hey! I’m Dominique Da Diva, and I am a radio/ media personality from Richmond VA currently on air on WOWI 103 JAMZ in Norfolk VA with iHEART Media.
ATBEL: So what made you want to get into radio? Did you major in that during your undergrad years? or was it something you just gravitated towards.
DD: I’ve always been interested in the entertainment industry, I recorded a fake radio show on my karaoke machine when I was a little girl but once I got to my junior/senior year of high school and began researching what kind of College degree I wanted to pursue I chose Mass Communications with a concentration in Radio & TV.
ATBEL: I ran across your IG page awhile ago when you did the video when you was talking about how he tries to break up with you like its going to stop you from being his girlfriend. Lmaooooo girl when I tell you I was weaker than osteoporosis watching that? After that, I was like yea this girl is getting a follow from me. Lol What made you make that video? Because on the lowest of keys, it’s like that sometimes. Lol
DD: No reason in particular, it’s just that at some point we’ve all felt that way. I’m just all about being relatable & showing we all deal with the same things. I had no idea that video would go so viral & I didn’t tag my name on it and I saw on Facebook its gotten over a million views.
ATBEL: What do you love most about what you do? Is there anything you don’t like?
DD: I love that I can completely be myself at all times . I love that I can spend all of my day listening to my favorite artist/ blogging about it/ interact with my listeners. Radio & TV is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do so I’m just blessed that my Plan A worked out.
ATBEL: I too majored in media with a focus on radio/tv broadcast so I’ve always looked up to women who are out here doing it big like Angie Martinez, Angela Yee, Ebony Steele, Gail Mitchell, Terri Thomas and etc. Do you have anyone that you look up too in this business? And if so, what is the best advice they have given you?
DD: I look up to Wendy Williams. The day she was actually at the station, I missed her and I wanted to cry. Not only did she begin in radio & she now has a successful TV show but I respect the power of her name & opinion. Whether you’re a fan of her or not–you probably want to hear what she has to say because you never know what she’s going to say. Whether you like her or not, she made you feel away & you paid attention. Very much like the star power Oprah has, Wendy is just more relatable to me.
ATBEL: What does the word Diva mean to you?
DD: DIVA just means a woman who is driven & very much in touch with herself. She’s fearless & determined yet very much a lady.
ATBEL: You have met a lot of dope people from the music industry; Is there anyone you haven’t met that you would love too and possibly interview?
DD: I haven’t met Beyoncé, Jay Z Or Drake but one day I will! Lol
ATBEL: Speak it into existence nah! lol What are some long term goals you want to accomplish? Like in 5 years where would like to be.
DD: My goal right now is to have a #1 radio show in a top 10 radio market as well as doing TV as an entertainment correspondent, all while staying on top of my website/social media at the same time.
ATBEL: You stay looking super cute too Ms.Ma’am. *Hairflip* lol What inspires your fashion sense?
DD: Ahahaha, thank you! I just go with whatever I feel good in. I’ve always been this way.
ATBEL: What advice do you have for other young women who are aspiring to be in the radio/tv field?
DD. My advice is to intern as soon as you can. Gaining hands on experience is vital. Build your brand & also find your niche. It’s a very competitive field, what is it about YOU that stands out.
ATBEL: That about wraps up all the questions I have for you today. Thanks again for stopping by to chat with me and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
You’re dope personality and hard working skills are going to take you far boo! But before we go… let everyone know where they can find you via social media.
DD: Thanks Queen I really appreciate you even taking the time to interview me. You all can find me everywhere on Dominiquedadiva.com! There’s links to my FB, IG, SNAPCHAT, Periscope I’m a social media maniac & I love it 🙂
ATBEL: You’re so welcome love! Be blessed and stay fabulous. We will have to do a follow up interview later on in the future..cool beans? Have a great one girly!
DD: Cool beans.
It’s always dope to see women out here doing the damn thing especially when it comes to succeeding in goals they have set for themselves and Dominique is doing just that. I know that we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future and I wish her nothing but the best!
Know anybody else who is doing really dope things that should be featured on this segment? Let me know! Because I have some questions for them too. lol
