I am such a music junkie and I love hearing new tunes from different artists especially one’s that are up and coming. With that being said, I want to introduce you to an up and coming STL artist named K.Haze for today’s ‘Noire Excellence’ post. K.Haze and I go way back like jersey dresses and tube socks and I could not be more proud to have been able to witness the growth he has done within his music. With our hectic schedules, it can be a challenge to catch up like how we would like too. I eventually got the opportunity to get up with him and since he is about to release his new music, I figured i’d pick his brain about it so I can get the inside scoop of all the new things K.Haze has been up too..
Shall we get this party started?
ATBEL: Hello love how are you!! It’s been a minute since we have been able to catch up but I see you are out here doing your music thing so tell me about it!
Also, for the people who don’t know you or your music.. what’s your name (artist or real name) and where are you from?
KH: Yes, it’s been a minute! I’m great… been just lying low trying to keep focused on singing, writing and finishing my BA. My name is K.Haze and I’m from Saint Louis, MO.
ATBEL: Who would you say are your biggest inspirations when it comes to music and what made you want to take this direction in life? Have you always wanted to do music? If so, when did you know that this is what you really wanted to do?
KH: That is such a tough question… I draw inspiration from different people and their struggles along with my own. Yes, I talk to strangers, and just hearing various stories and things people go through make me want to be a voice for them. And I just don’t want to be one of those people who fall into the whole “shoulda, coulda, woulda’s” and just follow my heart. I have always wanted to be a singer and actor growing up, so I have always tried to pursue it. I really started to take music serious once I started writing and coming up with various melodies at 12 or so.
ATBEL: That’s dope. I feel like being a voice that many can relate too is important when it comes to being an artist. It shows that they are not only one’s who have been through their situations and that somebody else besides themselves that really understands what it means to be in their shoes. You started writing melodies at 12? Awesome! At 12, I was chilln’ outside playing double-dutch with my sisters lol
ATBEL: What type of sound would you say that your music has? R&B? Soul? Etc
KH: Musically-fused. I would like to just think of my music as just really good music. Putting it in a category kind of takes away from just listening and enjoying it for what it is. I am inspired with pop, country, R&B, rock and Hip-Hop elements. But I am sure due to my ethnicity and vocal tone; people would want to throw me in the R&B genre.
ATBEL: Tell me about your new and up and coming project(s). I know you have a new single/video dropping Thursday (May 30th) so what can you tell me about that?
KH: Yes, I am dropping the single and video for “Say You Love Me”. I am using this as kind of an introduction to who K.Haze is. I kept everything pretty simple and straight forward. It’s me getting my feet wet just seeing how people are going to react to my sound.
ATBEL: Understandable. Are you nervous maybe even anxious about how people will react to your music? Putting yourself out there opens up the door for all type of feedback. Good and bad.
KH: Nope. lol I’m not worried because I am confident in my music and there is always going to be someone with something negative to say in whatever you do in life. Since you can’t please everybody, I’ll just continue doing what I do best and that’s making good music. If some people don’t like it, that’s fine because there are more people out there who will.
ATBEL: *Z-snaps* lol I heard that!
ATBEL: Do you have a mixtape or anything like that coming out later? Or is it just the single for now?
KH: I am still debating on releasing a mixtape at the moment. It all depends on the type of buzz I receive from my listeners. I want them to let me know what they want me to do. I have other singles that can be heard on my http://fb.bandpage.com/khaze and based on their reaction I can see where to go from there. I could either do a mixtape or release various singles and have my listeners vote on what they want to be the next video. I want to connect with my listeners, so based on their thoughts is where I will take the next move.
ATBEL: Can we expect you collaborating with any other artists on your up and coming music or is it going to be a solo thing for a while?
KH: No collabs at the moment. Just myself. I have a few in mind I would love to do, but I think right now, I want people to hear me clearly and get a concise interpretation of my sound and who I am as an artist. I would love to do a track with a rapper one day, though. I have my hopes set to one day work with Tef Poe, Vega, and/or Bryant Stewart. I am very proud they are from St. Louis and killing it.
ATBEL: Are they not awesome sauce?? Bryant Stewart is a good friend of mine and him and him along with the rest of the artists you mentioned are very talented individuals.
ATBEL: Have you done any of the high school tours like other local artist have to get your name out there? If not, you should! Because you are amazeballs and I think that would definitely help with getting your music out and expanding your fan base.
KH: I have not yet only because I have been busy recording material, but that is something I would LOVE to do. Especially being a person in high school who was bullied, I would love to be the voice for that underdog and let them know high school is just a ramp to the beginning of your life into becoming what you chose it to be. I also wouldn’t mind a college tour to turn up and be able to talk on some keep-it-real type shit!
ATBEL: Who bullied my friend??! *Cues run up get done up* lol But in all seriousness I think it’s awesome that you want to be the voice for the underdogs out there. It gives them the sense that someone really does care about them because a lot of time they do get overlooked like bullying is not a big deal when it really is. So kudos to you for that! Hell yea! A college tour would be dope. Definitely try and hit up BET for that because they do one every year.
KH: Agreed. and thank you! I appreciate that.
ATBEL: What helps you get in the mood to record your singles? Some artist light candles, dim the lights in the studio, etc.. Do you have any rituals that helps in getting you focused on when you want to do an epic song recording session?
KH: My dream session starts off with a meeting before hand with my vocal coach Juliet, then just breathing and meditating to stay focused. I love recording in the dark because I like to close my eyes and lose myself in the moment and I hate when the lights are on and you go the engineer and other people at the studio gawking at you while you try to get your emotion out. I also like to work exclusively with my engineer Nate Hershey because he is completely honest and if he doesn’t like a lyric or a certain delivery, he will let me know respectfully and make sure I give my best every time.
ATBEL: Sounds like you have a great support team behind you. It’s always great to have people in your corner who are supportive but who will also keep it real with you. You don’t want someone telling you that your voice sounds amazing just because they are your friend when it really sounds like a dying mongoose. ya know?
KH: lol!! exactly. I am definitely blessed to have such an awesome team.
ATBEL: Is anyone in your family into music? Or did you just branch off into this on your own?
KH: You know, I am just finding out I am not the only person in my family with a musical past. My older sister use to sing, and actually majored in music for a time in college. I also have cousins that are rappers and producers… and super talented at it.
ATBEL: Really? I didn’t know that. Music just flows through the families veins huh?
KH: Pretty much lol
ATBEL: As we all know, Thursday is the big day!!! You are releasing your new video for your new single “Say You Love Me”. Are you excited? Nervous? Where can people find your new single/video and other music and other info about you?
KH: You know what, this is the first time in my whole life I am not nervous. I am extremely happy, confident, excited, and anxious about releasing the video! I feel like people will truly feel the song and it’s meaning. The single can be heard on my band camp site http://k-haze.bandcamp.com/ , my MTV Artist profile http://www.mtv.com/artists/khaze, or my facebook page at http://fb.bandpage.com/khaze and in a couple of days, it should be available on iTunes.
ATBEL: Indeed!! I’m super excited for you and I really digged this new video from you sir! I feel like a proud momma watching you blossom into your own as you keep making more and more music. *sheds a thug tear* lol In my Gina from Martin voice… you go boooyyy!
KH: lol! I promise you are so silly. Thank you Erica. I truly do appreciate all of your love and support.
ATBEL: No problem. So what does the future hold for you and your music? Where do you see yourself in 5 years and what would be the greatest achievement that you could imagine doing music?
KH: I don’t know really. I have personal aspirations for myself, but I just want to live in the moment right now. All I want to do is be happy and still singing/ writing as my source of income. I think every musician’s greatest achievement would be to win a Grammy, but my greatest achievement in five years would be to balance a successful music career and a family. Accolades don’t mean much to me… music is about a feeling. If I get respect from making someone feel, that’s enough for me.
ATBEL: I like that response. I can tell that music isn’t just a hobby for you but you really have a passion for it and want to touch lives with it. Much respect to you for that.
ATBEL: As you may know, I’m big on quotes because I feel like they hold so much truth/power to them. Do you have any quotes that you kind of live by?
KH: LOL, I do! I have quotes on my mirrors, and apps on my phone for daily motivational quotes and bible verses that gets me through the day. Right now I am feeling, “Belief fuels passion, and passion rarely fails” and today’s quote “A failure only establishes this, that our determination to succeed was not strong enough.” Quotes like this keep my mind focused on the bigger picture. Music is my passion. I have no choice but to keep going…. It is who I am. I can’t escape it, LOL.
ATBEL: Yes!!! See I knew I wasn’t the only one who loves a good quote. Honey look, you gotta know that a daily Bible verse stays popping up on my phone! God is good all the time..
KH: And all the time..God is good!
ATBEL: You already know! Well that about wraps up our interview. I appreciate you taking the time to sit down and doing this with me. I wish you nothing but the best in all you do. Keep God first and follow your heart and everything else will fall into place.
KH: You’re welcome. I enjoyed this conversation and thank you for having me. Oh but of course! Keeping God first is a must. I’ll keep you posted on any new music and other information about up and coming projects I have in the future.
ATBEL: Sounds good love! Take Care
